About Us

Since its inception, the social sciences at the University of Chicago have played a leading role in shaping disciplines through relentless methodological and theoretical innovation, all while influencing each other through a culture of vibrant intellectual exchange between the disciplines. MAPSS students at UChicago are encouraged to engage fully in the life of this scholarly community by enrolling in courses with PhD students, participating in our student-led workshops, and attending the numerous talks, seminars, and conferences that take place each year.

Julianne recently connected with Audrey Weckwerth, a rising 4th year and SSD Communications intern.

These are excerpts from their exchange.

Kennedy Patterson

The Dean’s Opportunity Scholarship and at least one of its recipients boasted some important firsts: The need-based scholarship itself was awarded for the first time ever, and Kennedy Patterson, one of 16 inaugural recipients and a student in the Master of Arts Program in Social Sciences, holds the distinction of being a first-generation college student.
