A one-year interdisciplinary graduate program, the Master of Arts in the Social Sciences (MAPSS) offers students unmatched access to the renowned faculty and rich research resources of the University of Chicago. MAPSS students pursue a degree shaped by their interests and expanded by in-depth opportunities across social science disciplines and methods.

Whether their longer term goals include a PhD or a career in industry, not-for-profit, or government, MAPSS prepares students for those next steps. Mentored by faculty and taking the same classes as the Division’s doctoral students, students are immersed in rigorous social scientific inquiry. Students are guided by a member of our academic staff who works closely with them to sharpen their academic writing and research skills, and to formulate and execute a successful MA thesis project. Through extensive professional development resources, including an in-house Career Services team, students are supported in developing application materials for doctoral programs or employment. Additionally, an active and growing alumni network provides ongoing career development connections and opportunities.
