Michael Fabos
Industry Fellow

Michael Fabos (MAPSS ’08) is a seasoned industry and government professional with over twenty years of experience at the intersection of data science, strategy, and risk management.  He currently serves as Senior Manager of Business Intelligence at BMO Bank, where he leads a team of data scientists responsible for exploratory data analytics, transaction monitoring enhancements, and investigative support related to anti-money laundering (AML) and terrorist financing risks. Prior to joining BMO, he held senior compliance and analytics positions at JPMorgan Chase, focusing on AML monitoring and coverage strategy for various lines of business.

Before entering the financial services sector, Michael worked in operations research, strategic planning, and counterterrorism analysis across the Executive Office of the President and the U.S. Intelligence Community. His work centered on dismantling terrorist finance networks and transnational criminal organizations, applying quantitative methods and analytical frameworks to complex national security problems.  Michael also brings substantial teaching and tutoring experience to the classroom, and is currently an adjunct faculty member in Social Science at Purdue University and in Mathematics and Statistics at Southern New Hampshire University.

In addition to his MAPSS degree, he holds a Ph.D. in International Studies and Political Science from the University of Birmingham (UK), specializing in grand strategy, American foreign policy, and early Cold War history.  He also holds an M.S. in Mathematics and Statistics from Georgetown University, and a B.A. in History from Washington University in St. Louis.

An engaged alumnus, Michael has served on the University of Chicago MAPSS Alumni Board since 2019 and participates in Washington University in St. Louis’s Alumni and Parents Admissions Program.  He resides in Prospect Heights, IL with his wife and three children (and their white lab Link), and enjoys staying active through fitness, family travel, fishing, and the occasional game of chess.
