Message from the Dean

Welcome to the University of Chicago. We in the Division of the Social Sciences are pleased to know your interest in our Master of Arts Program in the Social Sciences. The faculty of the Division of the Social Sciences takes great pride in MAPSS. In many ways, it exemplifies all that is best about the University of Chicago. Because the Divisional faculty teach the MAPSS program, it gives students the opportunity to study with many of the World's most outstanding social scientists in this, the best collection of social departments in any university in the World in courses designed for students at the graduate level. Because MAPSS is intentionally a program in the social sciences, its students reflect and reinforce the Chicago commitment to social inquiry that transcends the boundaries of traditional academic disciplines. Finally, because MAPSS is the creation of the Social Sciences faculty, its students share the passion for ideas that animates the University at its core. At this University, the coin of the realm is a good idea, and it matters not whether its source is a Nobel laureate, a full professor, a doctoral candidate or a MAPSS student. In its nearly 75 years, the Master of Arts Program in the Social Sciences has produced alumni who have made their mark in the academy and in every other field of worthwhile endeavor, from journalism to business to public service. We should be proud to have you as part of this fine tradition.
